Welcome to McNair Secondary School! Whether you are a beginning Grade 8 student or nearing graduation, information in our booklet is intended to help you make the best possible choices for learning at Matthew McNair Secondary
While some courses are required for graduation, many others can be selected to meet your individual interests and goals. As you move into the latter years of your secondary schooling and your goals are clearer, these choices become even more important. We encourage you to experience a range of electives to support the development of a well-rounded graduate.
Once you have made your selections, we will design an individual timetable for you. Sometimes this timetable may not be exactly the way you expected it to be because of class size limits or graduation requirements. For this reason you should think carefully about the alternate course choices you list on your program planning sheet; it is quite possible you may end up taking one or more of these courses.
You should also be aware that our timetable is driven by student requests. If insufficient numbers of students choose a particular course, it is necessary for us to drop it from the master timetable. What this means is that all courses listed in this book may not be offered each year or every semester. Sometimes due to staffing or other changes, there may be some modifications of course offerings and descriptions without prior notice.
School Counsellors will visit classrooms between February 8 to February 28 to help you plan your courses. A paper copy (option sheet) will be given to you for completion before you go on-line to choose your courses.
Refer to the attachment below for full course descriptions
Online course selection - site will open February 7, 2022
Step One: Login onto Student Portal https://www.myeducation.gov.bc.ca/aspen/logon.do
Step Two: Prepare to select course for 2022/23
I)Click the My Info top-tab.
II)Click the Requests side-tab.
The Requests page appears: At the top of the page, in the Instructions box, read and follow the instructions for entering your requests. Depending on the subject, you can either select any course, or are required to accept the courses recommended for you.
Note: If any of your courses are required or recommended by your teachers, they might automatically appear as requests when you first view the Requests page.
Step Three: Select courses for 2022/23
In the Primary requests box, select your requests for the different subject areas.
For example, to select your request for a math course click Select next to Math. The course you can request appear.
Select the checkbox in the Select column of the course(s) you want to request. That course becomes a course request when you click OK and it appears in the Status column. The requests now appear on your Requests page.
Step Four: Post your requests
After you complete entering your requests, click Post at the bottom of the page. This lets your counsellor know that you are finished entering requests. If you have not selected enough courses to satisfy requirements for your academic track, the system lets you know which area you need to make more requests in.
Step Five: Logoff and return your option sheet to your counsellor.
