Student Safety and Wellbeing During Darker Winter Mornings
British Columbia now remains on Pacific Time year-round. As a result, winter mornings will be darker than in previous years.
Students are encouraged to take extra care when travelling to school during darker morning hours. Parents, caregivers and other drivers are also asked to use extra caution around schools and in neighbourhoods.
Walking, Biking and Scooting
Wear bright or reflective clothing and use bike or scooter lights when needed. Use marked crosswalks, sidewalks and bike lanes, stay aware of your surroundings and make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street.
Driving
Slow down and use extra caution when driving around schools and neighbourhoods. Watch for pedestrians, bikers and scooter users. Use designated drop-off areas and follow parking and traffic signs around schools.
Sleep and Wellbeing
Keep a consistent sleep schedule and continue waking up at your regular time for school. Spend time outside during daylight hours and stay active. These simple habits can help support energy and wellbeing throughout the winter.
