Promoting Student Agency Through Personal Learning Time (Flextime)
Flextime at McNair is a key driver of student engagement, purpose, and belonging, grounded in the intentional development of student agency. Through Flextime, students transition from passive recipients of instruction to active, self-directed learners who reflect on their needs, set meaningful goals, and assume responsibility for their growth. By giving students authentic choice and voice in how they use their learning time, Flextime reinforces belief in self and promotes purposeful achievement—cornerstones of our commitment to meaningful student engagement.
Embedded within the school day as protected, structured learning time—32 minutes, three times a week—Flextime ensures equitable access for all learners. Guided by the principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, this model provides targeted support for students requiring additional guidance while also offering enrichment opportunities for those ready to extend their learning. Through timely teacher support, skill development, reflection, and goal setting, Flextime is designed to narrow achievement gaps and strengthens student confidence and competence.
Flextime also reflects our commitment to a strength-based approach that values students’ authentic selves and celebrates the diversity of our school community. As students learn to advocate for themselves, manage their time effectively, and pursue personalized goals, they build pride in who they are and how they contribute to the community. Collectively, Flextime reinforces a school culture where students feel supported, valued, and empowered to thrive—academically, socially, and personally.
