At McNair Secondary, we believe that hope is a powerful force that inspires growth, resilience, engagement, and achievement. Hope is more than simply wishing for positive outcomes. It is the belief that our actions today can create opportunities for a brighter tomorrow and that every student can experience success when provided with the support, encouragement, and opportunities they need to thrive.

Our theme for the 2026-2027 school year is Hope.

This theme builds on the important work undertaken during the 2025-2026 school year, where McNair focused on strengthening student engagement, belonging, literacy, and numeracy through the development of a Caring Community of Learners and a Marlin Strong culture. Staff worked collaboratively to provide targeted academic support, build positive relationships, and create opportunities for students to contribute meaningfully to the school community. Through intentional literacy and numeracy interventions, strategic use of Flextime and Resource support, goal-setting practices, and school-wide belonging initiatives, many students demonstrated increased confidence, improved engagement, and greater ownership of their learning. Grade 8 students, our primary priority learners, benefited from focused support that strengthened foundational skills and supported a successful transition into secondary school.

The evidence gathered throughout the year reinforced an important understanding: when students feel connected, capable, and valued, hope grows. Students who actively participated in intervention opportunities and school-connected experiences were more likely to demonstrate academic growth, increased participation, and a stronger sense of belonging. Staff observations, student reflections, and assessment data highlighted the positive impact of combining skill development with relationship-building and strength-based practices.

At McNair, we recognize that hope thrives when students develop confidence in their abilities, feel a strong sense of connection to their community, and experience success in their learning. Hope encourages perseverance when challenges arise and inspires students to pursue their goals with optimism and determination. As students build confidence, they become more willing to take risks, learn from setbacks, advocate for themselves, and embrace new opportunities for growth.

While progress has been made, the evidence also indicates a continued need to support students whose literacy, numeracy, attendance, confidence, and engagement levels remain below expectations. As a school community, we recognize that sustaining hope requires ongoing collaboration, responsive interventions, and a commitment to ensuring every learner feels connected, capable, and valued.

As we move through the 2026-2027 school year, we will continue to deepen student engagement, belonging, and achievement by strengthening early intervention practices, increasing student agency, and expanding opportunities for meaningful participation in learning and school life. We will focus on improving Grade 8 literacy and numeracy outcomes, increasing student ownership of learning through goal-setting and reflection, expanding opportunities for leadership and student voice, using data to inform practice, and strengthening collaboration among staff, students, families, and community partners.

By continuing to build a Caring Community of Learners and embracing the values of being Marlin Strong, McNair will foster a culture where hope is strengthened through confidence, connection, and achievement. Our commitment is to ensure that every student experiences success, develops belief in their own abilities, and feels a strong sense of belonging within our school community. At McNair, hope is more than a theme. It is a shared commitment to supporting every student on their journey toward success, well-being, and a promising future.
